Personality:
Having grown up as the older sibling to her fraternal twin Tsukasa, Kagami learnt to be the responsible one of the two and your first impression of her may be that she comes across as very serious and maybe even scary. Of course this impression certainly doesn’t go unfounded, with her short temper and commanding attitude one certainly wouldn’t want to get on her (or Tsukasa’s for that matter) bad side. But this is barely half the story and Kagami’s heart isn’t nearly as cold as one might first believe, in fact Kagami is an incredibly caring individual and not only for her twin sister. Kagami has a deep sense of attachment to her friends but you’d have a hard time getting her to admit it as she can be exceptionally shy and defensive when the subject is brought up and if pushed further her temper can easily turn her aggressive. In the end Kagami has a lot of trouble expressing her true feelings and only acts as she does to cover them up. This of course only serves to make her seem more distant from others, and Kagami often feels very lonely and has trouble bonding with new people.
Intelligent and hard-working, Kagami always scores high on tests and exams and she diligently remains on top of her studies. This typically leaves her less hard working friends (ie: Konata) and her sister to come to her for help, or in most cases copy her homework, and although Kagami tries to protest and encourage better habits in the two she ultimately tends to give in to such demands. But this just goes to show how she is always willing to support and help her friends and she often offers advice, even if those she gives it to don’t always take it. However Kagami can be surprisingly patient with other people (as angry as she may become with them) and is able to recognize whether they’re really putting their heart into it or not. Of course if they’re not, then Kagami is quick to criticize and tease. In fact Kagami would perfectly fulfil the straight man in any comedic duo, observing those around her and commenting with a dry sense of wit.
However Kagami herself is not without her insecurities and while she is quick to put down Konata for her undeveloped features Konata can easily turn this on Kagami who (while certainly not undeveloped) is nothing more than average. In fact she often frets about her figure, in particular her weight and constantly monitors how much she’s put on or lost. But try as she might to diet Kagami has a powerful weakness for food and if she ever manages to lose weight it won’t be long until she slips and puts it back on. Additionally Kagami is extremely unsure when it comes to romantic relationships, she usually tries to avoid such matters but much like her relationships with her friends she can become extremely flustered and deny any such claims of romantic interest and if asked out (or if she thinks she’s being asked out, at least) she’ll immediately turn from her normally serious demeanour to a shy little girl.
Due to her serious and patient (but very firm) nature, Kagami makes a fantastic leader and she is very capable of pulling groups of people together to get things done. In fact this determination holds strong in all parts of her life, and while this can make her stubborn it makes her a very reliable person.
In terms of hobbies Kagami greatly enjoys reading -especially light novels- and she can often lose track of time while reading, or be unable to put down a good book. In fact this is one of the only times when her organizational skills can falter and she can often mess up her schedule due to becoming so engrossed in a book. Additionally she does express interest in manga and anime although her interest in such things is far more casual than when you compare her to someone like Konata. Kagami also enjoys videogames, in particular scrolling shooters, but when it comes to multiplayer games Kagami is the sort who likes to win above all odds.
Strengths:
Physically Kagami is for the most part just a normal high school girl, however she does seem to have some athletic talent at least as can be observed in the Lucky Star OVA during the fourth segment where she effectively dominates the volleyball game.
Mentally Kagami is expectedly very intelligent and while not a wealth of trivia like Miyuki her studious and diligent personality means that she’ll well versed in matters pertaining to her school work and she always earns high scores on exams. Kagami has a strong will to learn and through pure diligence she could probably be taught almost anything.
Emotionally Kagami has a strong determination to get things done and get them done right, while this again can be observed in her studies this is also notable in episode 24 where she takes command of the cheerleaders and pulls them together in order to pull the routine off. This was despite originally being uninterested and hesitant about the whole affair, but once being dragged into it she expresses her desire to follow it through.
Weaknesses:
As mentioned Kagami is physically just your average high-school girl and doesn’t have any special powers or anything of the sort. However one weakness of hers is her stomach. Kagami loves to eat and while she attempts to diet she tends to give in fairly quickly. For example in Episode 4 she explains how as celebration of losing weight she rewarded herself by letting herself eat freely for the night only for this to result in her putting all the weight she’d lost back on.
While Kagami maintains an emotionally strong image to most except her closest friends deep down she has a lot of trouble properly expressing herself. Rather than being up and honest about herself Kagami can usually resort to more defensive, and occasionally aggressive methods as a ways of diverting from the subject. However to the more wise it’s usually fairly obvious what she’s trying to do. For example in episode 21 Kagami claims the photo that she takes with her friends to be embarrassing, in actuality she has the photo pinned to her wall and evidently is quite sentimental about it. Additionally Kagami’s determination can result in her being very stubborn, and while she is normally rational if she gets worked up she can be difficult to stop.
